Despite all the technology and visual effects in emails these days, the copy still matters. In fact, simple text emails get more clicks than emails with images and HTML. So what are you left with? Great words to boost clicks, leads, and sales.

Subject Lines

This is the first obstacle you must overcome, so make it good. Start off by using calls to action. The trick is to make them subtle and interesting. If you blurt out, “Buy our widget!” you won’t get too far. Instead, try something like:

  • Competitors would kill for this
  • One liners that sell
  • Daft to forget about it
  • The tech market’s aflutter. Why?

Subject lines should be clear, concise, and pique interest instead of explicitly promoting a sale.

The Message Must Match

Once you get them to open your email, make sure the message they encounter makes sense. For example, if your subject line talks about a competitive advantage, then give them one. Anything else will reduce click-through rates and damage trust.

Make It Relevant And Close

Your message must be relevant to the reader. Using the same example, you could address a client by saying something like:

“85% of your competitors would change their sales tactics today if they had this information.”

This opening line matches the subject line and is highly relevant to the reader. Also, use of 2nd person language (you, your, yours) establishes closeness.

Tell Them What It Does For Them

Features are informative, but benefits sell. Incorporate into your message how you make the reader’s life easier (save money, time, etc.) People avoid pain; show them how you can help them do this.

Let’s say you’re selling project management software. Instead of telling them what the software tools and features are, you speak about benefits, like this:

  • Integrate multiple users
  • View one screen campaign overviews
  • Enjoy web based access anywhere
  • Invoice work accurately
  • Scale up quickly if needed

One way to think about benefits is to imagine the word “You” before each line of text.

Resist the temptation to tell the whole story in the email. Instead, give a short, but complete, snippet. Like a movie trailer, the story should be there just enough to get them to buy a ticket to see the rest of the show.
