At the crux of it, content marketing is a long-term strategy, based on building a strong relationship with your prospects, by giving them valuable content on a consistent basis that is highly relevant to them.

So really your aim is to connect with your prospects on a much deeper level than a one-off advertisement ever could. (We're great at this here at Sherpa, just take a look at all the free resources we have on offer)

If you want to dive deeper into the history of content marketing then click here for a short video from the content marketing institute that will bring you up to speed.

But back to the present day, if your content is entertaining, informative, emotional or eccentric then you give people a reason to want more of it.

Alternatively, we can go back to the content marketing institute, for a more academic definition...

… a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action. (Content Marketing Institute)

Now that you have a good understanding of what IT content marketing is, you're probably thinking 'how can I succeed at it myself?"

Well, look no further as I am going to take you through a few of the best IT content marketing methods as follows...

1. Infographics

These allow you to bundle up valuable information, summarise it and then present it to the world in any way you like!

They are all about statistics and numbers and are the perfect way to get your point across quickly and memorably. The best infographics tend to tell stories... but you need to do your research to find out what the best story is to tell to interest your buyer personas.

So remember...

  • Tell a story using powerful design
  • Target your buyer personas
  • Share on social media and use in blogs

2. Video

Video is widely considered as the most effective way to engage with your IT audience, this is because the human brain can digest an image 60,000 times faster than it can text.

When it comes to what type of video to create you need to have a customer-centric approach. Think about the problems they may face, come up with solutions and use this as the basis for your storyboard.

From past experience the best type to go for, for us as an IT marketing agency at least, is an explainer video... you can take a look here

3. Blogs

If your blog has been pushed to the back of a long list of priorities then you're doing it wrong!

Blog's improve SEO, boost customer relationships, create brand awareness and drive more traffic to your website... Especially for B2B content marketing! (are you thinking about bumping blogs back up that priority list now?)

Another top tip would be to find influencers to guest post for, this will increase awareness of your blog to get more eyes on your content and boost your inbound marketing efforts.
